Optometrists gained insight into emerging treatments for inherited retinal disease, applying therapeutics in practice and the latest developments in glaucoma management at Therapeutics Manchester (24 June, Hilton Manchester Airport Hotel).
During the inaugural event, practitioners also had the chance to take part in a lacrimal syringing clinical skills workshop.
Workshop leader, Declan Hovenden, told OT that while lacrimal syringing was within the capabilities of optometrists, at present the procedure is not regularly performed in practice.
“I think probably one of the main reasons for that is a fear of doing the procedure. It’s a little bit more invasive than the typical things we would do in optometric practice,” he observed.
“The workshop today is really about demonstrating to optometrists that it is something they are all capable of doing and breaking down that barrier and fear that they have in their heads about it,” Mr Hovenden shared.
Practitioners performed the procedure on each other during the workshop, providing insight into the patient’s experience of the treatment.
“The practitioner is acting as the patient so they get to experience it from both sides. I think that is very valuable,” Mr Hovenden said.
Event attendee, Rebecca Ireland, described her experience at Therapeutics Manchester as “brilliant.”
“Having done part of the independent prescribing course already it is a really good chance to have a refresher in how I should be using these skills in practice,” she shared.
Following on from Therapeutics Manchester, Therapeutics London will be held at the Holiday Inn, Bloomsbury on 23 and 24 September.
